A palace that survived a fire

The palace was built between 1767 and 1785 for the Duke of Berwick and Liria, and the name comes from Liria, in Valencia, where the fourth duke was born. In November 1936, during the Civil War, a fire left only the façades, although most of the works had been saved.

The Duchess Cayetana rebuilt it between 1948 and 1956, on designs by Edwin Lutyens, and it reopened on 13 June 1956. It has been open to visitors since 19 September 2019.

Goya, Titian and a library of manuscripts

The collection includes a portrait gallery of the dukes and paintings by Titian, El Greco, Murillo, Zurbarán, Rembrandt and Rubens. One of them is Goya's Duchess Cayetana in a white dress. The library keeps manuscripts, among them the Alba Bible and letters of Columbus. In the back garden there is a cemetery for the family's pets.
